5 Interior Trends To Adopt In 2017

New year, new décor – it’s a good enough excuse to explore new designs and interior trends if you’ve wanted to experiment in your property for a while. Every year sees new themes for interiors; in 2016 we saw enormous popularity for copper everything, sausage dog accessories, pineapples and plenty of bohemian scatter cushions. So what awaits your home in 2017?

Here are five interior trends you won’t be able to live without and if you’re planning on selling your home then these tips will look great and give your house the best chance of selling.

Glorious Green

With Pantone announcing that the colour of 2017 was Greenery, interior designers have really embraced bringing green back into fashion. You can use it as boldly or as subtly as you like - whether you just buy some green soft furnishings such as cushions or curtains or you could paint entire walls and bring your rooms to life. Injecting life into your home with green can also include introducing indoor plants that don’t just look nice but purify your air too!

Bold Bronze

With copper now moving out of the spotlight, it’s swiftly been replaced by a softer (on the eye) metal in the form of bronze. Mixing bronze into your home décor is great for warming up spaces and ideal for items such as light fixtures, vases and accessories. Bronze also works really well when it comes to clocks and mirrors, if you struggle for inspiration.

Marvellous Marble

A material that’s making a come back is marble. According to Young Huh who was named as one of Vogue’s five young interior designers on the rise in 2015: ‘We’re going to see this trend in both kitchens and baths. It’s that combination of something very natural and clean.’ If you aren’t ready to commit to a whole tub of marble, what about just opting for a chopping board or some glass mats to ease yourself in.

Happy Hygge

The end of 2016 saw the enormous explosion of Denmark’s hygge phenomenon, (pronounced Hoo–Gah) and everyone has gone mad for hygge this year. It essentially means cosy and self-indulgent, so, instead of modern uncomfortable chairs and seating, you should cover everything in sheepskins, throws, and arrange candles at different heights and allow yourself to relax in peaceful tranquillity.

Sheepskin Baa Stool

Curious Cork

Perhaps alongside bringing more greens and natural colours back into your home sees the fashionable return of cork interiors from the 70s. Cork is extremely environmentally friendly; it’s made from the bark of a tree so the tree doesn’t have to be cut down. Whether you accessorise with cork or go all out with cork flooring you’ll have a stylish house while being good to the earth.

Introducing German label GANTlights

German designer lighting company GANTlights was established in 2012 by Berlin architect Stefan Gant when he began creating architecturally inspired, minimalist designed luminaries. Highly contrasting materials like raw concrete and gold, silver or copper were joined, resulting in a truly beautiful aesthetic contrast. Since then, the product range offered by GANTlights has been steadily expanded and includes hanging pendants, table lamps and wall lights. The products continue to be characterised by their distinctive shapes and unique combination of materials. Their appearance is both modern yet timeless and manages to simultaneously stand out while blending in!

In Germany, and Berlin in particular, GANTlights is well known. The brand has its own showroom in Berlin and has also received critical acclaim for its products (for example the consumer choice award in 2015 for its [C] Series pendant lights). All of GANTlights' products are painstakingly handmade in Germany.

Series C GANTlights

Stefan says;

GANTlights started in my kitchen you could say. During my architecture studies I decided I would like to make my own lamps for my kitchen. Once it was decided that concrete should be the material of choice I realised that “molding” is easier said than done. The whole project turned into quite a bit of research and work during which I frequently thought “maybe I should just go to that big Swedish furniture store instead to buy some lights and be done with this”.

However, with encouragement from my friends I somehow prevailed. When I finally arrived at a product that was worthy of hanging in my kitchen, the feedback from my friends was so positive. I therefore thought maybe other people would also like them. This is effectively how GANTlights came to life in 2012.

These days we’re based in Berlin in our own workshop and store (“the office”). Two full time employees are helping me and all three of us are very happy that there is such a positive response to the lights we make.

GANTlights

I take inspiration mainly from my environment rather than other designs. I like the simple things such as riding my bike through Berlin and looking at different corners of buildings for example. The geometric shapes of those “little” things here and there provide inspiration for my lights.

GANTlights

Concrete furniture and lighting is often just “polished grey concrete”. That’s at least what most people appear to think of when they hear “concrete design”. In an interior design context, concrete on its own is somewhat limited to very special settings where it fits seamlessly. Many interior designers and end customers therefore steer away from it.

Although our core material is light grey or dark grey concrete, we merge it with gold, silver, copper, corten steel or oak for example. This aspect is what makes the products unique. The blending with those materials changes the dynamics of concrete as a material completely. It opens up a multitude of settings in which the product can be utilised by interior designers.

Stefan Gant

For end customers, the aesthetic contrast of the materials makes it easier for them to go for product based on concrete. It also provides for a real talking point which people seem to very much enjoy.

Dos and don’ts when decorating with wooden furniture

Variation is key when it comes to decorating. Contrasting the right textures, colours and patterns is essential for creating a stylish outcome. When it comes to wood, if you try to stick to too many similar colours, your home can end up feeling too impersonal. On the other hand, cobbling bits and pieces together that you’ve collected over the years can end up looking a bit messy.

Here are a few suggestions for you to get started on making your wooden furniture work in your home.

Dos

Let’s ease you in gently; how are the internal doors looking in your home? A plastic, old and tired door can affect your whole decor. Not only is plastic not the prettiest for doors in the home they’re also not that soundproof. Maybe it’s time you replaced it for an authentic wooden door with a pretty knob as the handle. This will instantly upgrade your home from tired to tremendous.

If the idea of combining wood is still a little perplexing, then it’s best you just go all out and mix light and dark coloured woods instead of trying to match. Dark oaky colours look lovely with a softer, lighter-coloured grained wood.

If you have dark coloured wooden beams in your home, then contrast with a lighter coloured table and chairs. This way you set the mood as calm rather than dark and moody.

Pick woods that make you feel warm and your house will instantly feel cosy! Things like bedroom furniture including wardrobes and bedside tables can shake up a room if they are a soft, light coloured pine over a dark oak.

The rustic look is still very much in so DO absolutely buy those old wine crates and use them for storage. It’s all about bringing the outdoors in for the feel of freedom and good old-fashioned countryside.

Hustle Coin recommend in their 19 DIY Rustic Home Décor Ideas to use an old tree trunk as a table. All you need is a big tree trunk then sand and varnish it and screw legs on to make it the height you’d like – simple and so beautiful!

Make things less chaotic by introducing white to the room. If you feel you have a lot of different wooden objects, a simple white hued cow hide or rug can pull them all together and give the room a new calm feel.

Solid sideboards and surfaces – from the kitchen to the cabinets! You can’t go wrong with a solid wooden sideboard. Wood also ages really well in the kitchen, stains and burn marks will fade or blend in over time, unlike unforgiving plastic or marble tops.

Don’ts

Do not go cheap – there’s a reason that those pieces of furniture are cheap and that’s because the wood is poor quality and it doesn’t look nice. Things like coffee tables, picture frames and side tables can really bring down the grace of a room if the wood looks cheap and nasty.

If you can, either recycle or paint any varnished orange or pink wood. It’s so out-dated that it makes people shudder but can be salvaged with little hassle with some Annie Sloan chalk paint.

That’s it for don’t folks, just ditch the varnish, don’t go too mad with your different shades of woods and you’ll be fine!
