We are often asked, “How many cushions do I need?”. In the living room, too many cushions could make it look rather cluttered, plus they could even make your sofa LESS comfortable. Although we all have different preferences when it comes to the look, comfort must be the priority. Maybe start with one or two in the corners of your sofa and you can always add more if you prefer.

Obviously, the style and size of your sofa will dictate how many is most comfortable. As a general rule, one cushion is plenty in an armchair.

When it comes to styling in the bedroom, layering is key. Choose two or three sizes and start with the biggest at the back to create height and reduce in size coming forward.

What about style? Should your cushions ‘match’? Look for cushions in colours and patterns that will coordinate with the palette you are already using in your home.

More often than not, the sofa will be a plain colour acting as a blank canvas for your cushion collection. Rather than having several of the same cushion, it’s visually much more interesting to mix and match your cushion covers, with different textures, patterns, colours and styles.

Start with a couple of designs / prints that you really love and then layer in neutrals or solid colours to complement those. When choosing patterns, a combination of large-scale prints and smaller designs avoid them fighting for attention.

One benefit of adding in plain or neutral designs is that you can switch out the patterned covers to create a whole new look without having to replace every single cushion!

Think about texture, mixing velvet and linen or silk and fur is guaranteed to bring an element of drama to your scheme.

Does size matter? In a formal living room you may want to choose varying designs but stick with one size for a smart, elegant appearance. For a more relaxed scheme, combine cushions of different sizes and shapes to create a cosy and welcoming look.
